One such condition is gaining water weight, which can make you feel bloated all the time. Here we have mentioned a few reasons that can make you gain water weight and what can be done to prevent it.

What is water weight?

When fluid gets collected in tissues, it causes swelling. Water weight is the area where the body retains fluid and most commonly, it goes to the kidneys. Instead of flushing out, the body stores it between organs and skin. It makes you uncomfortable and can be temporary. Water weight is not the actual weight gain.

Main causes of water gain

Main causes of water gain are salt and carbs. Intake of excess salt can lead to water gain as sodium binds with water and traps it in the body. Hence, the higher the salt intake, the more are the chances of gaining water weight. Similarly, excess intake of carbs can also lead to water weight gain. They impact fluid retention as according to health experts, when we eat carbs, our body doesn’t use them right away and stores it as glycogen. Glycogen attracts water and the more glycogen is stored, the more are the chances of water weight.

Reasons for water weight Certain medications:

Intake of certain medications can lead to retaining fluid. Especially, medicines for high blood pressure, anti-inflammatory drugs, and some diabetes medicines tend to retain fluid. You need to consult a health expert to know if your medicine can lead to water weight gain.

Poor blood circulation:

Another reason for water weight is poor blood circulation. The valves of our leg veins help in blood flowing towards the heart. But when there is poor blood circulation, it leads to the blood pools in the lower extremities and hence, causes fluid retention.

Pregnancy:

Pregnancy can also cause water weight. It usually happens when the woman is nearing her due date. This is why pregnant women notice swollen hands, feet, face, and ankles. You may blame changed hormones but the growing belly is also to be blamed. It tends to put a strain on the blood vessels and fluid goes out into the tissues and gets trouble in getting back to the vessels. Swelling during pregnancy that also causes pain is a serious concern and needs immediate medical attention.
